Remember the Spirit

Take a moment to take a deep breath. In and out. Go back to your childhood. What was your favorite thing about Christmas, or even about this time of year? Was it the tree? I can tell you personally for me it was always the lights.

Take a moment to take a deep breath. In and out. Go back to your childhood. What was your favorite thing about Christmas, or even about this time of year? Was it the tree? I can tell you personally for me it was always the lights.

My bedroom window was higher, and I loved watching the snow fall and the Christmas lights twinkle. I loved going outside and hearing nothing but complete silence. It has always been my favorite thing about this time of year.

Do you remember the joy or contentment you felt? The easy way you became excited about Santa or presents? The happiness about spending time with the ones you love?

Why am I writing this or even reminding you of this? Because I feel that some if not most of us have lost sight of the true meaning of this time of year; for someone as innocent as a child to enjoy lights and snow. For it to be something so simple but so enjoyable, where has that energy gone?

It does not involve religion or gifts, the hectic pace of black Friday, or even arguing over when is the right time to start decorating. It is the practicality of emotion, heart and generosity; and most of us as adults have completely lost it.

Take a look at yourself, your family, your kids. Take a look at your emotions towards this time of year. Readjust. The spirit of Christmas, Yule, etc. is about sharing the best version of you, the best version of your heart and gratitude.

I saw someone post on social media the other day, that it is amazing in the month of November how everyone pronounces what they are grateful for but they forget to do that for the rest of the year. This time of year reminds us that we should be grateful all year…that miracles, hopes and dreams are still possible.

For those of us who have lost someone, be grateful to them. For their love shines even brighter still and they are always with you. This is the time of year when their energies soar and encompass a beacon of light and love for you. For those of us alone, you are not.

I repeat, you are not, for this time of year should send a wave of energy to all, and I will tell you from a personal standpoint that if I hear about someone being alone for the holidays, I try to welcome them to my home. I was raised that way. Do something for someone else, not seeking a reward. Share love.

There should be no war on Christmas, no hatred, no political or religious debates. Center yourself on being that person of hope, that beacon of light and remember that joyful child you once were and let that wisdom and happiness shine.
